Visiting this website

When you open a page, your browser necessarily transmits connection data such as your IP address, the requested address, the time and browser information to our server so that it can deliver the page securely. We do not keep access logs containing IP addresses and do not create usage profiles. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in providing a secure website (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The pages do not set cookies, run analytics or advertising scripts, or load content from other providers. Fonts and images are served by this website itself.

Hosting

The website, the sign-up service and its database run on a server of Hetzner Online GmbH, Industriestr. 25, 91710 Gunzenhausen, Germany, in its Falkenstein data centre. Encrypted database backups are stored in Hetzner Object Storage in Helsinki, Finland. Hetzner processes this data on our behalf under a data processing agreement (Art. 28 GDPR).

Your language and appearance choices

If you explicitly choose a language or appearance, the website stores only that choice in your browser’s local storage. It stays in your browser and is not sent to us or to an analytics service. This storage is strictly necessary for the function you requested (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). You can remove it by clearing this website’s browser data.

Signing up for the beta or the newsletter

The sign-up form collects your email address, your chosen email language, which of the two lists you choose and, for the beta, an optional test smartphone. We never ask for your partner’s details and do not detect your device automatically. We record when you submitted the request and when you confirmed it, together with the version of the consent wording, so that we can document your consent. To prevent abuse, we keep keyed, pseudonymised counters derived from your IP address and email address for at most 24 hours (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).

Beta interest list

With your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR), we use your details to contact you by email about the Knowna beta test. Joining the list does not create an app account, reserve a test place or enroll your partner. Unconfirmed requests are deleted after 7 days; confirmed registrations are deleted 180 days after confirmation. You can withdraw at any time through the link in every beta email, which removes your registration immediately.

Newsletter

If you tick the separate newsletter box, we send you news about Knowna and new journal articles by email, based on your consent (Art. 6(1)(a) GDPR). The newsletter is optional and independent of the beta interest list and the free year. We only send it after you confirm your subscription through the link in our email (double opt-in). Unconfirmed requests are deleted after 7 days. A confirmed subscription remains until you unsubscribe; leaving or the expiry of the beta interest list does not end it. Every newsletter contains an unsubscribe link, which deletes your subscription. Our emails are plain text without tracking pixels or tracked links.

Email confirmation and a security cookie

Opening a link from our email does not change anything by itself: you confirm, withdraw or unsubscribe with a button on the page. These pages set a short-lived first-party security cookie that protects the action against forged requests. It expires after 30 minutes and is not used for tracking (Section 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). Emails are sent over encrypted connections through our own mail server, which runs on Hetzner servers in Germany.

Contacting us

If you write to hello@knowna.net, the message is received by Cloudflare’s email routing service and forwarded to our mailbox. Cloudflare, Inc. (USA) is certified under the EU–US Data Privacy Framework; standard contractual clauses also apply. We use your message only to answer your request (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) and delete it when it is no longer needed.

Backups

Withdrawal, unsubscribing and expiry remove your data from the active database immediately or at the next hourly cleanup. Encrypted backups may still contain it until they expire; backups are deleted after at most 36 days. If a backup ever has to be restored, we do not resume contact with addresses that had already left a list.

Recipients

We do not sell or share your data for advertising. Besides the hosting and email providers named above, no other parties receive it, unless we are legally required to disclose it.

Your rights

You have the right to access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing and data portability, and the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests (Art. 15–21 GDPR). You can withdraw consent at any time with effect for the future (Art. 7(3) GDPR), most easily through the links in our emails. Contact us using the details above. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority (Art. 77 GDPR). Providing your data is voluntary; without an email address we cannot add you to a list. There is no automated decision-making.

Fictional examples

The product examples are fictional. The editorial photographs were generated for Knowna without customer content. They do not show private couple moments or customer testimonials.

Separate from the app

Beta and newsletter records are separate from app accounts and from private couple content in the planned app. The app will receive its own privacy information before it becomes available.
